Sparta Rotterdam came from behind to defeat ADO Den Haag 2-1 and lift themselves off the bottom of the table.

Dick Advocaat’s side are running out of games to avoid finishing in the bottom three and he would have seen the game with ADO as a good opportunity to get three points.

However, ADO started brightly and after having a goal disallowed they took the lead on six minutes when Erik Falkenberg slotted the ball into the net off the post from the edge of the box. It should have been 2-0 before the break, but Lex Immers missed a good chance before Falkenberg hit the post.

Sparta improved in the second half after Thomas Verhaar and Robert Mühren were brought off the bench and the equaliser came on 62 minutes Verhaar played Michiel Kramer in on goal and the striker made no mistake with his finish. Moments later the striker got in again but this time he was denied by Robert Zwinkels.

Mühren saw a strike hit the side netting and then struck the post with another. However, the midfielder proved to be the match winner with seven minutes left as he got free before slotting past Zwinkels.

The win lifts Sparta above Roda JC and FC Twente but they remain five points from safety. ADO Den Haag are eighth.
