The Rotterdam side had to beat Jong Ajax to clinch the title with three games remaining, and goals from Loris Brogno, Michel Breuer, and Sherjill MacDonald saw them seal their return to the top flight in the Het Kasteel Stadion.
Alex Pastoor’s side will now take part in the Eredivisie for the first time in six years, having been relegated back in the 2009-10 season. It means that there could be three Rotterdam based clubs in the Eredivisie next season, with Feyenoord and Sparta already confirmed, while Excelsior need to beat the drop.
Its a great achievement for the oldest club in the Netherlands, with Sparta Rotterdam languishing in 16th place only two seasons ago and looking far away from a top flight side. However, with a mix of excellent youth products such as Rick van Drongelen and experienced players like Thomas Verhaar and Paco van Moorsel, Sparta have romped to the title ahead of NAC Breda and VVV Venlo.
