Stegeman has been in charge of Heracles since the 2014/15 season and guided them to Europe for the first time, but announced his decision to leave the club earlier this season.

The 41-year-old has now signed a two-year-contract with Go Ahead Eagles which will begin in the summer. Stegeman played for the Deventer club for three years and will not return as a coach to try and guide them back to the Eredivisie.

Technical adviser Paul Bosvelt said on the appointment, “I think it says a lot about the person John Stegeman that he is taking this step, and where many see this as a step back, he sees it as a great challenge, which he is fully committed to: we want to play structurally in the top 5 of the Jupiler League, with outliers up, we are convinced that John is the right man to fill in as a trainer, together with the staff, “
