The 37-year-old’s contract with Everton expires this summer and the former Netherlands number one has told Voetbal International that he is aiming for a return to the Eredivisie.
He said, “I’m here in my fourth and final season, because my contract is about to expire. I may be 37, but I haven’t been so fit in years. I’ve never talked about quitting. I’m now looking into my future.
“I am now in a phase of life in which other things are also important, it is not only about me, but also about my family. I played abroad for nine years. Yes, with varying degrees of success, but should I have stayed with Ajax then? I think that’s too easy.
“Now the time has come to return to the Netherlands and then we will see if there is anything beautiful passing by. If the picture is correct, I would like to continue.”
Stekelenburg left Ajax in 2011 and played for AS Roma, Fulham, Monaco and Southampton before moving to Everton.
