The 37-year-old will leave Everton this summer when his contract expires and earlier this month he stated that he was open to a move back to the Eredivisie.
Sparta Rotterdam and Heerenveen were linked, but Stekelenburg has now decided on a return to Ajax, signing a one-year deal.
Stekelenburg played more than 250 official matches for Ajax between 2002 and 2011 before spells with Roma, Fulham, Monaco, Southampton and Everton.
The 58-time Netherlands international joins as an extra option for Erik ten Hag with Bruno Varela leaving, and Andre Onana also hoping to depart.
