PSV battled from behind to defeat Vitesse Arnhem 3-1 on Sunday after goals from substitutes Donyell Malen and Mario Gotze.

After the 4-2 loss at Olympiacos on Thursday, Roger Schmidt decided to make wholesale changes and lined-up in a 5-3-2 formation to match Vitesse. Only ย Yvon Mvogo, Denzel Dumfries, Pablo Rosario, Ibrahim Sangarรฉ and Eran Zahavi kept their place in the line-up.

Schmidt’s plan was already in tatters after four minutes with Vitesse taking the lead through Armando Broja, who netted from an Eli Dasa cross.

Yorbe Vertessen missed a good chance to make it 1-1 but it was Vitesse that were kicking themselves for not netting a second before the break. Broja could not net with an empty goal in front of him with the striker hitting the post. Just before the break, Vitesse were awarded a penalty, but after consulting VAR, Bjorn Kuipers changed his mind and it was a free-kick instead. Yvon Mvogo saved from Oussama Tannane, who also hit the post.

Schmidt changed his tactics at half-time, bringing on Donyell Malen and Phillip Max, while also changing to a back four. Later on, Mario Gotze and Ryan Thomas also entered.

In the 66th minute, PSV found the equaliser with Malen scoring from an Eran Zahavi pass.

Remko Pasveer then denied Malen and Zahavi, but could not prevent Gotze from netting from close range in the 86th minute. The German midfielder then sealed the victory late on with a tap-in.

PSV get the victory and they move to within three points of Ajax, who have two games in hand. Vitesse are now fifth.
