Te Wierik left Groningen in the summer to join Derby County but the move has not been a success for the defender, who failed to make an impression in the Championship.
Derby County were willing to let the defender go this month and Groningen have swooped to bring their former captain back to the club. Te Wierik has signed a contract until mid-2024.
Groningen technical director Mark-Jan Fledderus told the club’s website, “In my view, we have done excellent business in both the short and long term with the return of Mike. Mike can quickly join the group. We know his qualities and he is familiar with the way we work, so we not only add value to our selection, but also immediately get more options in a defensive way.”
The fee paid for the 28-year-old is undisclosed.
