Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has backed Donny van de Beek after he put in a disappointing performance against Real Sociedad on Thursday.

For the first time in 330 days, Van de Beek started for Manchester United in their Europa League clash against Real Sociedad. However, the Dutchman was substituted and given harsh criticism from the English press.

Speaking to The Athletic, Ten Hag refused to call Van de Beek a bad buy for the club, “At some point that will be possible, but not yet.”

Ten Hag stood up for the midfielder, “Donny has made a pretty good preparation. Then he got injured and now he’s back. I think he played very well for fifty minutes. He delivered a great performance.

“I know him very well, but he delivered what I did in terms of positioning and the transition.”

“But I think he can do more and that’s his greatest quality: he can pose a bigger threat to an opponent’s goal. Why Van de Beek sometimes has a hard time at Manchester United? I don’t know, I can only talk about my time here. In my time here he is performing well in the playing time we have given him.”
