Born in Nigeria, Gong started his career with the GBS Academy before being snapped up by Slovakian side AS Trencin in 2017. He made his professional debut for the club in April but only made two first-team appearances during the 2016/17 season, contributing one assist.
However, last season Gong was a revelation for the Slovak side, contributing 11 goals and 12 assists which led to the youngster catching the eye of several European clubs.
Anderlecht and Genk were circling but it was Vitesse who swooped first to take the Nigerian to Arnhem.
Playing Style
According to Vitesse director Marc van Hintum, “Hilary is a super-fast winger who can play on both sides,”
Gong will be a major threat for Vitesse on the counter-attack throughout this season, but speed is not his only weapon. He has plenty of tricks, a composed finish and excellent crossing ability.
What to expect from Gong this season
Vitesse fans are very excited about the arrival of their new winger and they will be hoping that the 19-year-old can hit the ground running in the Eredivisie after an impressive came during the first leg of their Europa League qualifier against Viitorul Constanta.
Roy Beerens and Bryan Linssen will start the season as Vitesse’s first choice wingers but his pace will be a major asset from the bench if coach Leonid Slutsky needs an alternative.
