Verdonk has earned rave reviews in the Feyenoord academy since joining the club in 2005 and made a name for himself at the U17 European Championships in 2014 with a stunning goal against England from distance before finishing as a runner-up with the Netherlands.
In March 2015 Verdonk made his long-awaited Feyenoord debut as a substitute against Excelsior, but surprisingly that proved to be the only first team appearance so far for the young centre-back, who spent most of last season between Jong Feyenoord and the U19’s. However, Feyenoord have sent the now 19-year-old on loan to PEC Zwolle and Verdonk will have the chance to show his quality in the Eredivisie.
Style of play
Verdonk is rather small for a centre back, but makes up for his lack of height with excellent anticipation, speed and a great leap. He loves to carry the ball out of defence, has a great passing range and a lethal long shot.
Over the past year, Verdonk has occasionally moved from the centre of defence to the full back position and played at left back for the Netherlands U19’s at the European Championships recently. In this position, Verdonk can put his pace and crossing ability to good use, and its where he is likely to start with PEC Zwolle, who have also signed centre-backsĀ Ted van de Pavert and Django Warmerdam this summer.
What can we expect from Verdonk this season
A run in the Eredivisie has been a long time coming for Verdonk, who seems to have been close to the Feyenoord first team for years. At PEC Zwolle, Verdonk will have the chance to showcase his talent, either at left back or centre-halve and prove he is capable of being part of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side next season. PEC Zwolle have a reputation for nurturing talents on loan and in Ron Jans, Verdonk has the perfect coach to develop his game.
