The job was consequently given to Tim Sherwood, who is understood to be willing to step aside and work under Van Gaal as an assistant should that option be made available.

Spurs’ chairman Daniel Levy held talks with the former Barca boss in December before follow up talks last month, but now wants fresh discussions over whether the Dutchman can take over in the summer.

Van Gaal has admitted that he would like to get back into club football in the summer when he leaves his position with Netherlands, and if he does not get an offer from a top club then he will consider retirement. Despite Frank de Boer being linked with Tottenham last week, Goal believe that Van Gaal is still Daniel Levy’s first choice.
