After the 0-0 draw in Azerbaijan last week, nothing but a win would do for Alfred Schreuder’s side, and they set out to attack Qarabag from the start on Thursday evening.
However it was the visitors who had the first chance, with Nick Marsman having to make a good stop from striker Reynaldo. Twente began to take control as the half went on, and Kasper Kusk saw a shot blocked from close range before Luc Castaignos finally opened the scoring on 37 minutes. The striker raced onto Kyle Ebecilio’s through ball before slotting into the net.
Five minutes into the second half Qarabag stunned Twente on the counter attack, with Muarem Muarem brilliantly finishing off the swift move to give the Azerbaijan side a precious away goal.
The goal sparked Twente into action, but the post prevented both Luc Castaignos, and Robbert Schilder in quick succession, while Hakim Ziyech also wen’t close with a long range effort.
Qarabag defended resolutely until the end to hold onto the draw, which sees them progress, while Twente will now only have the league, and KNVB Cup to challenge for this season.
