With AZ Alkmaar tripping up at Heerenveen, Feyenoord had the chance to move six points ahead in the race for the final automatic European place. After 14 minutes in Enschede they took the lead with Eljero Elia skipping past two Twente defenders before cutting the ball back for Michiel Kramer to slam it past Nick Marsman.
Hakim Ziyech was hardly given an inch by the Feyenoord midfield, but remained a constant threat from set pieces, and he came close to equalising with a free kick which Kenneth Vermeer saved well.
However it was Feyenoord who dominated proceedings, but the Rotterdam side couldn’t turn their possession into a second goal. Dirk Kuyt and Kramer both went close before the break while Elia hit the underside of the crossbar with a header in the second half.
Late on Ziyech had a penalty appeal waved away when he appeared to be tripped by Miquel Nelom, but Feyenoord held on to consolidate third.
Feyenoord are now six points ahead of Utrecht with four games left, while Twente sit 13th.
