Heerenveen’s poor form in the league continued on Saturday as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at FC Twente.

The Frisian’s arrived in Enschede on a four-game winless run in the league and coach Jurgen Streppel decided to ring the changes with Martin Odegaard dropped to the bench in favour of Pelle van Amersfoort, while Younes Namli and Doke Schmidt came into the defence.

However, it was FC Twente who began the game firmly on top and they had three excellent opportunities to take the lead in the first five minutes, but goalkeeper Erwin Mulder came to the visitors rescue.

Heerenveen recovered from their poor start and started to create chances for themselves, with van Amersfoort going close with a shot from distance, while Arber Zeneli caused danger on the wings. Reza Ghoochannejhad had their best chance but the striker just failed to control an excellent pass by van Amersfoort.

Seven minutes into the second half, FC Twente were awarded a penalty for a foul on Enes Unal in the box and Mateusz Klich netted from the spot to make it 1-0. The rest of the game saw Heerenveen search for an equaliser, but Sam Larsson hit the bar, Joost van Aken failed to hit the target from close range and Nick Marsman denied Van Amersfoort.

The victory rises Twente up to 6th while Heerenveen are 8th.
