Ajax struggled to get out of their half, with a wayward shot from Viktor Fischer there only real chance in the opening stages.

Twente took a deserved lead on 22 minutes with Luc Castaignos finishing from close range, after a cross from Quncy Promes.

Castaignos was again denied by Cillessen before the break as the home side threatened to run away with the game against a flat Ajax side.

In the second half, Twente sat back and allowed Ajax to press, with Fischer shooting just over the bar before Siem de Jong shot straight at Marsman on the turn.

On 65 minutes Twente got three men behind the Ajax’s defence, but Youness Mokhtar’s pass was too far in front of Castaignos, and the forward couldn’t control it.

On 73 minutes, Ajax missed a huge opportunity to level, with De Jong firing wide when unmarked at the penalty spot. However with ten minutes to go, Ajax were level, after Andreas Bjelland misread a long ball, and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson prodded the ball into the net.

Substitute Danny Hoesen should have won the game for Ajax after the ball came to his feet in the box, but his low shot was kept out by Marsman.

A point apiece was a fair result after the second half, with Ajax staying third, while Twente stay at the top, but PSV will overtake with a win over Groningen on Sunday.
