Without Hakim Ziyech, Twente struggled to find inspiration in the first half, but they were awarded a penalty on 37 minutes when Jerson Cabral was fouled. The winger stepped up for the spot-kick but his effort was saved by Tom Muyters.
After the break Twente continued to struggle but they were given a big advantage on 82 minutes when Jurgen Mattheij was shown his second yellow card for a foul on Cabral. Moments later Cabral opened the scoring for Twente after a combination with Chinedu Ede, and Zakaria El Azzouzi then sealed the victory with a late header.
Twente remain 13th with the win while Excelsior stay 15th and will be hoping that Willem II don’t find a win against Cambuur on Thursday.
