Frank de Boer’s side headed to Enschede full of confidence after five wins out of five without conceding a single goal. Twente on the otherhand have failed to earn their first win and went into the game with Rene Hake in charge after he replaced the sacked Alfred Schreuder.
An away win was expected, but after twelve minutes FC Twente had the lead when Hakim Ziyech’s low corner was turned past Jasper Cillessen by Felipe Gutierrez. The first goal the Netherlands number one has conceded in the Eredivisie this season.
Ajax struggled to find a way back into the game and six minutes into the second half Twente doubled their lead through a Ziyech paneka from the penalty spot after Nemanja Gudelj was punished for a handball.
De Boer brought Viktor Fischer off the bench and on 65 minutes the attacker halved the deficit, finishing off an excellent pass by Riechedly Bazoer. Yaya Sanogo then came off the bench and earned his side a penalty on 82 minutes, going down after a challenge from debutante goalkeeper Joel Drommel. Gudelj stepped up to fire Ajax level and earn the leaders a point.
Twente stay 16th after the point, while Ajax will stay top of the table after this weekend.
