FC Twente may still have Hakim Ziyech but they started the season with a shock 2-1 defeat against Excelsior in Enschede.

exctwThe wantaway Moroccan was invisible in the first half as Twente struggled to create chances and Excelsior took the lead on 14 minutes through a swift counter. Nigel Hasselbaink was sent down the left and his cross was prodded into the net by Kevin Vermeulen.

Excelsior created further chances and just after the hour mark they added a second through Leeroy Owusu who raced onto Luigi Bruins through ball before slotting the ball past Nick Marsman.

After the second goal Twente woke up and Ziyech tested Tom Muyters with a vicious strike before Jari Oosterwijk pulled a goal back from close range. However, Twente couldn’t make a push for a late equaliser and Excelsior held on for a good win to start the season.
