UEFA have confirmed that any leagues which cannot be finished must select their European places based on sporting merit.

Earlier this week the Dutch government banned all professional football in the Netherlands until September. This means it is impossible for the Eredivisie to finish the campaign, leading to questions on how the European places would be handed out.

There was speculation that the places could have been handed out on last season’s positions or even UEFA Club rankings. However, UEFA has now confirmed that all places, in leagues that cannot be finished, must be handed out on sporting merit and the points earned this season.

That means that Ajax and AZ Akmaar should take the Champions League positions, while Feyenoord, PSV Eindhoven and Willem II would go into the Europa League.

The KNVB are to discuss with all clubs on Friday how the season will end and the consequences of it. European places and a decision over relegation will be decided after that meeting.
