Ajax traveled to France as one of the favourites for the tournament, and they proved their power with a routine win over Lyon. Donny van de Beek rounded the French side’s goalkeeper before slotting in the opener on 18 minutes, and soon after the midfielder set up Abdelhak Nouri to fire in the second.
In the second half Leon Bergsma completed the victory, while Lyon were reduced to ten men after Alo Kalulu saw red. Ajax will now move onto the quarter finals where they will face Chelsea.
Earlier on Wednesday PSV hosted Roma, and the match got off to a great start for the Eindhoven side when Steven Bergwijn netted. Roma turned the game around in the second half, but Matthias Verreth equalised to send the game to penalties. Bergwijn, Sam Lammers and Dante Rigo all missed from the spot as Roma triumphed 3-1.
