AZ Alkmaar climbed to the top of the Eredivisie temporarily with a 4-1 win at Groningen.

With PSV losing at Cambuur, AZ knew a victory would catapult them to the top before Ajax played against Go Ahead Eagles. Pascal Jansen was boosted by the return of Jesper Karlsson, who made his first appearance of the campaign upfront.

Karlsson played a role in the opener after only three minutes as his shot was parried and Dani de Wit netted the rebound. Karlsson then scored the second in the 19th minute after being set up by Tijjani Reijnders.

AZ lost De Wit to injury, with Riechedly Bazoer coming in for him. Just before the break, Groningen pulled one back through Ricardo Pepi.

Karlsson was brought off at the break and his replacement, Mayckel Lahdo hit the crossbar as AZ went in search of a third. In the 63rd minute, AZ did find the next goal as Milos Kerkez used the outside of his boot to find the net after being played in by Reijnders.

Peer Koopmeiners appeared from the bench and he set up Lhado to make it 4-1 just before the end.

AZ remains unbeaten and they will be at least second after this weekend, while Groningen are 12th.
