The away side started brightly with Simon Thern testing goalkeeper Robbin Ruiter with a fierce strike, but Utrecht then took control and only a brilliant block from Canar Cavlan prevented Willem Janssen from opening the scoring. The midfielder also saw a header fall just wide as the home side pressed.
On 40 minutes Utrecht were awarded a penalty after an unnecessary handball by defender Lucas Bijker, and Sebastian Haller made no mistake from the spot to send his side into half time ahead.
Heerenveen pushed for an equaliser after the break and eventually found it with ten minutes left as Henk Veerman’s knock down was volleyed past Ruiter by Luciano Slagveer. Utrecht nearly won the game soon afterwards but Haller’s header was well kept out by Erwin Mulder and both teams had to settle for a point.
The first point is now on the board for Utrecht, while Heerenveen move onto four points.
