maher psvThe Eindhoven side were knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday, and went into the game against Utrecht with only one win in their last 14 matches.

However PSV got off to the perfect start as Adam Maher’s cross beat everyone and flew into the bottom corner after only three minutes.

Ten minutes later it was 2-0 to PSV when Memphis Depay netted from close range on the rebound as Jurgen Locadia saw his shot saved by Robbin Ruiter.

Utrecht had the opportunity to get back into the game from the penalty spot following Karim Rekik’s foul, but Jeroen Zoet kept out Steve de Ridder’s poor effort.

On 30 minutes PSV made it 3-0 with Memphis Depay squaring to Locadia, who found the bottom corner with a low shot.

Things went from bad to worse for Utrecht before the break, as Markiet brought down Depay in the box, and the winger picked himself up to make it 4-0 from the spot.

The home side looked for a way back into the game in the second half, but they were reduced to ten men with 20 minutes left after Steve de Ridder was shown his second yellow for diving in the box.

Big left back Steve Belthuis bullied his way into the box before firing past Zoet to give the home side something to cheer about. However in the final minute the defender brought down Arias in the box, and was shown his second yellow.

Memphis Depay was denied his hat-trick as Ruiter saved his penalty, but Adam Maher fired in a low shot moment later to seal a 5-1 win for the Eindhoven side.

PSV will hope this performance provides a springboard as they look to get back into the title challenge, but they remain 9th, and 13 points behind leaders Vitesse.
