Vitesse went into the game as favourites after going through their last eight games in all competitions unbeaten, and after 11 minutes Peter Bosz’s side were ahead through Davy Propper, who capitalised on a huge error by goalkeeper Jeroen Verhoeven before slotting into the empty net.
However the lead only lasted a minute as Yassine Ayoub’s free kick to the back post was met by Christian Kum, and the defenders header found the top corner to draw Utrecht level. After the goals the game opened up and both sides went on the offensive, with Denys Oliynyk striking the post for Vitesse before the break.
Utrecht, who had lost three of their last four matches, came out in the second half determined, and on 69 minutes Ruud Boymans was picked out in the box by Rubio Rubin, and the striker fired into the bottom corner for his sixth in five matches.
Any chance of a Vitesse comeback was ended seven minutes later as Arnold Kruiswijk pulled Rubin down in the box, earning himself a second yellow and awarding Utrecht a spot kick, which was dispatched by Boymans.
The win lifts Utrecht above Vitesse into 8th spot, while the Arnhem club are one place behind in 9th.
