Jean-Paul de Jong went into the game still unbeaten as Utrecht boss after four draws and one win. His side started brightly with Gryano Kerk firing just wide in the 13th minute before Sean Klaiber missed a big chance.
In the 17th minute, the opening goal came with Sander van de Streek beating Philippe Sandler before setting up Kerk to net. Six minutes later, Diederik Boer parried Mark van der Maarel’s shot and Zakaria Labyad netted on the rebound to make it 2-0.
Utrecht continued to dominate in the second half, but Yassin Ayoub fired wide from a good position, while Giovanni Troupee couldn’t beat Boer when in on goal.
PEC Zwolle barely threatened but they pulled one back late in the second half when Mustafa Saymak netted a penalty after Queensy Menig was fouled. It proved just to be a consolation as Utrecht held on to move one point behind PEC Zwolle, who stay fifth.
