Sparta finally got a win at the weekend to boost their survival hopes and Dick Advocaat’s side went to Utrecht looking for at least another point as they lined up in a defensive 5-3-2.
The first half was one to forget with Mateusz Klich and Gyrano Kerk going close early on before the hosts struggled to find a way through the Sparta backline.
The visitors came out of their shell in the second half and David Jensen had to make a good save to deny Bart Vriends, while Soufyan Ahannach fired over the bar. Leroy Duarte then got through one-on-one with the Utrecht goalkeeper, but Jensen came out on top.
The match appeared to be heading for a draw but substitute Lukas Görtler netted with his first touch from Zakaria Labyad’s cross to give Utrecht all three points.
Utrecht climb to sixth, while Sparta remain bottom.
