Utrecht have progressed to the European playoff final after a slender 1-0 win over Groningen.

Three thousand fans were allowed in to watch the playoff semi-final which saw Arjen Robben start for Groningen, in what could be his final game before retiring. The 37-year-old has still not decided whether he will keep on playing next season.

The game was a tense affair and there were hardly any chances in a goalless first half. After the break, it was Robben who came close with a free-kick that deflected against the post.

Twelve minutes before the end, Utrecht had the lead with Simon Gustafson putting an unstoppable strike into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Groningen came close to equalising but Mike te Wierik put his header over the bar before Jorgen Strand Larsen also put a great chance off target.

Robben tried to make something happen but Utrecht held on and they progress to the final and will face either Feyenoord or Sparta Rotterdam for a place in the UEFA Conference League.
