Utrecht drew 0-0 with Valletta in Malta as the Europa League second qualifying round got underway on Thursday.

Utrecht struggled to create chances throughout the match, which was played under the baking heat of Malta. However, David Jensen also kept Valletta at bay with some smart saves to ensure Utrecht took a draw back home.

The highlight of the game came in the 34th minute when the Utrecht fans sung Abdelhak Nouri’s name. The heartbreaking news of the Ajax midfielder’s brain damage clearly had an effect on some of the Utrecht players, with Yassin Ayoub clearly emotional when the players came onto the pitch linking arms in tribute to the 20-year-old.

The second leg takes place in Netherlands next week.
