Utrecht booked their place in the KNVB Cup final with a 2-0 win over Ajax in midweek. They took that confidence into their clash with Sparta, who were also feeling good after a 5-1 win in the league last weekend.
The hosts dominated but it took until the 42nd minute for them to take the lead. Sean Klaiber, who was in tears after receiving a yellow card against Ajax which rules him out of the KNVB Cup final, swung the ball into the box and Bart Ramselaar fired into the net.
Five minutes into the second half, Klaiber then set-up Adrian Dalmau to make it 2-0. The Spaniard, who has had plenty of injury issues this season, showed plenty of emotion after the goal.
Simon Gustafson made it 3-0 a minute later before Ramselaar headed in his second on the hour mark. Klaiber then made it 5-0 with a fierce strike from distance.
Joel Piroe pulled one back for Sparta just before the end but it was just a consolation.
Utrecht are now fifth and closing in on Willem II. Sparta sits 11th.
