Utrecht will no longer fear relegation after they moved eight points clear of the drop zone thanks to a 1-0 win over FC Twente.

utrtwe hallWins for Heracles and Go Ahead Eagles this weekend would have had Utrecht looking over their shoulders should they have lost to FC Twente, but despite the visitors creating several chances it was Sebastian Haller’s goal which separated the sides.

Twente took control in the first half, but could not find the opening goal as Hakim Ziyech missed two great chances, while Younes Mokhtar shot against the woodwork.

Ten minutes into the second half Haller gave Utrecht the lead, side-footing past Nick Marsman after a corner was flicked into his path. Minutes later the striker was presented with another glorious opportunity, but this time Marsman parried the Frenchman’s effort.

Twente pushed looking for the equaliser but Robbin Ruiter pulled off great saves from Ziyech, Andreas Bjelland and Luc Castaignos, while Felipe Gutierrez hit the post and Utrecht defender Mark van der Maarel cleared off the line.

Utrecht held on to move 12th in the table, while Twente are one place above.
