In the build up to the game Heerenveen boss Foppe de Haan compared Utrecht to Bayern Munich, and that was evident in the first half hour as Erik ten Hag’s side torn through the hosts time after time. After six minutes Utrecht had the lead through Andreas Ludwig, but Erwin Mulder had to deny Sebastien Haller and Ruud Boymans in a ferocious start from the away side.
Being second best frustrated Heerenveen, and that turned to anger for captain Joey van den Berg who saw red after a tough challenge on Haller on the half hour mark, which led to the French striker being replaced at the break. Despite the disadvantage Heerenveen nearly equalised just before half time with Sam Larsson’s strike coming back off the post.
In the second half Utrecht dominated but had to wait until the 75th minute to add a second goal with Ruud Boymans heading in. Three minutes later the in-form striker slid in his second of the evening to take his tally to 13 goals in his last 12 starts.
Utrecht completed the rout through former Heerenveen defender Chris Kum on 86 minutes. The win takes Utrecht above AZ and Feyenoord, who both play on Sunday, while Heerenveen remain 12th.
