The 26-year-old has been one of the standout performers for a struggling Sunderland this season, and is closing in on a £12 million move to Crystal Palace. However, Van Aanholt hasn’t represented Netherlands since last June in a friendly with Austria, which was only his sixth cap.

Asked about his Netherlands situation, van Aanholt told Voetbal Inside, “It seems that the coach does not see me, whether he wants to give me a chance. That’s a pity. Not only because I am fit, but also in form. I’ve heard that you have to play at your club to qualify for Oranje. I will not name names, but some guys with Oranje don’t even play every week.”

Danny Blind’s son Daley has been Netherlands first choice left back recently, despite the Manchester United star struggling to get into Jose Mourinho’s team this season. Other recent call-ups have been Sporting’s Marvin Zeegelaar and Jetro Willems, who have both struggled for game time and form this campaign.

Blind’s selections have come under scrutiny in the past with many reporters confused by his refusal to call-up Erik Pieters who has been a solid member of Stoke City’s side for the past few seasons. Netherlands aren’t back in action until March

Netherlands aren’t back in action until March when they travel to Bulgaria for a must-win World Cup qualifier.
