Van Basten has been suffering from health problems recently and was granted a two week leave from his duties with AZ. The former Dutch international, who’s playing career was cut short by injuries, lost his father in July and has reportedly been suffering from palpitations.
De Telegraaf reported this morning that the 49-year-old would not be able to return to his coaching position, but this news has been denied by AZ director Earnest Stewart who told NOS, “It is incorrect and very premature”
Van Basten himself sent a text message to NOS stating the news was incorrect and that he would be returning to AZ’s training ground on Monday to discuss the situation further with the club.
AZ are set to release a statement on Van Basten’s future on Monday after the talks, and if they are forced to part ways then current assistant coach Alex Pastoor is believed to be the clubs choice as successor.
