Van Bommel, 42, only moved into management this season, replacing Philip Cocu at the Eindhoven side where he won four Eredivisie titles amongst other honours as a player. Prior to this, his only previous managerial experience came working as the assistant manager for Netherlands U-17, Saudi Arabia, and Australia.

The Dutchman spent two seasons as a player with the Rossoneri, winning both the league and cup in this time, and La Repubblica is also reporting that upon leaving Milan in 2012 he promised to someday return as a coach.

Gian Piero Gasperini (Atalanta Bergamo), Mauricio Pochettino (Tottenham Hotspur), Marco Giampaolo (Sampdoria) and Arsène Wenger are also said to be candidates.
