The former goalkeeper took on the role in July last year but has been heavily criticised in the Dutch media after the search to find Danny Blind’s successor as Netherlands head coach turned into a farce. Van Breukelen has now announced that he will be stepping down from his position on August the 1st.

Van Breukelen told the KNVB website, “I leave with a good feeling, because I know I have done everything to achieve our goals.

“I wish the KNVB on all the best and keep hoping for a Dutch team in the upcoming World Cup and a successful EURO’s for the women. I believe in the strength of our football and that will remain so.”

Van Breukelen will remain in the role until August the 1st and then a successor will be named. Who that will be is still unclear, but it was widely known that Louis van Gaal is being lined up for a high position with the KNVB.
