Erwin van de Looi is confident that Mohamed Ihattaren will be important for the Dutch national team in the future despite more rumours of a switch to the Moroccan national team.

Ihattaren was in the Netherlands provisional squad for the Euro quarter-final against France, but he was dropped when Van de Looi announced his final selection on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference, Van de Looi said, “Mo was in the preliminary selection, but had already missed some games at PSV at that time. We had taken him in anyway in case he would rejoin PSV. He is really a serious option for us because of course, he is a player with special qualities.

“But he was also not in the selection for the last matches at PSV. We have been in contact with PSV and understood that Mo is not match fit at the moment. That is why he has dropped out of our team.”

There are rumours that Ihattaren could be considering a switch to Morocco, but Van de Looi is confident that Ihattaren will choose Oranje, “Mo chose for Oranje a while ago and since then there has been a regular hitch, so that he has not seen any matches or selections. But we have every confidence that Mo will return to the level that he can achieve. Then he can be a very valuable player and make a difference for the Netherlands. Not only for the U21’s but certainly also for the Dutch national team, that would of course be the best.”
