The 46-year-old was set to leave the club at the end of the season but quit earlier this week after backlash from fans who called for him to resign immediately.

van de Looi said, ”I am of course disappointed. You really do not want to make such a decision as a manager. I wanted to finish the job and I had previously stated back in January that I wanted to finish the job at Willem II and remain in the Eredivisie.

”The recent developments forced my to take this decision.

”I have not resigned due to angry Willem II supporters. The situation at the club was slightly more complex than that.

”I have not been threatened by Willem II supporters. There is no specific trigger about the decision that I have taken. I received a lot of support from many people within Willem II.

”I noticed that the environment became difficult for the Willem II players to perform to the best of their ability ”
