Sander van de Streek scored an excellent goal as Utrecht defeated AZ Alkmaar 1-0 in the AFAS Stadion.

AZ went into the game riding on a high after the victory against Feyenoord at the weekend, but Utrecht’s form has also improved in recent weeks.

Myron Boadu had the first chance of the game but his powerful strike was kept out by Eric Oelschlägel. After that, Utrecht improved and Gyrano Kerk and Sander van de Streek got chances before the break but could not find a way past Marco Bizot.

Oelschlägel made another excellent save to deny Boadu early in the second half, while Bizot was also in good form to keep out Kerk from close range.

However, Bizot was finally beaten in the 69th minute with Van de Streek finding the top corner with an excellent strike from distance.

Zakaria Aboukhlal, Tijjani Reijnders and Jordy Clasie all came off the bench as AZ went in search of the equaliser. However, Yukinari Sugawara put an excellent chance wide. Then with the goal gaping, Boadu and Reijnders got in each others way and the former shot wide.

The defeat means AZ are fourth and they could be ten points behind Ajax if they beat Willem II on Thursday. Utrecht are 8th.
