Van den Brom was very complimentary about the opponent they faced but lamented injuries sustained for their next league match against Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday.
He said, “You could see tonight that Zenit St Petersburg are a difficult opponent and a fantastic team. When you play against such an opponent you have to dig deep and stay with them to make a fist of it in the game.
“In the first half we did not give too much away but the 2 and 3-0 came to quick for us to respond and stay in the game.
“This defeat will stay with us due to the way in which we lost and the injuries to Ron Vlaar and Wout Weghorst who will both not be in contention for our league game away against Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday which is disappointing.”
