Keizer was promoted from his role as Jong Ajax coach after Peter Bosz left at the end of last season but after only six months in charge he was sacked. Erik ten Hag has now been appointed.

Speaking to NOS, van der Sar said, ”We felt that it was the right decision to shake up the back room staff considering the ambition that we have here at Ajax.

”During the last 6 months, we have had our doubts given the performances of the team under Marcel Keizer. Although we wanted to follow our decision through and keep Marcel in charge. But in hindsight, the decision to appoint Marcel as Ajax manager was the wrong decision.

”Marcel did good work during his time at Ajax but we felt the time right to make a decision in January.

”Our European games were a massive disappointment and also the games we lost in the Eredivisie in particular against Vitesse Arnhem. We did not see enough progression and we felt a change was needed.

”It was also a difficult decision to relieve Dennis Bergkamp of his duties with him being an icon of the club but we wanted to make a new start.

”You have to communicate with your colleagues and boardroom level and backroom staff and come to a decision and that is what we have done.”
