The 32-year-old was out of contract at the start of this summer, but decided to reject a move back to Ajax in favour of joining Spanish side Real Betis.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, the Dutchman stated that he really wanted to rejoin Tottenham, where he played between 2010 and 2012, but he received no offer from the Premier League club.
Van der Vaart said, “Because I didn’t have a contract I almost tried to come back (to Tottenham), then Betis came and I decided to come to Betis, but Tottenham was always special,”
“But if (Tottenham) had wanted me, I would have gone. But Betis came and the decision was quite quick: Betis.”
The former Ajax and Real Madrid midfielder then went on to say that his two years in London were the best of his career, and he was stupid for leaving.
He said, “It was a stupid decision, the most stupid in my career to leave Tottenham. I absolutely regret it because it was the best two years in my football life.”
