The German side, that has never been relegated, currently sit 17th in the Bundesliga and eight points from safety.

Speaking to German Sport 1, Van der Vaart, who has had two spells with Hamburg as a player has offered to help his former club in any way he can.

Van der Vaart said, “I would like to help, I do not care if that would be in the Second Bundesliga. It would be an honor. As a player or in another position. HSV is my club.”

On why he thinks Hamburg are in the situation they are, he added, ‘In recent years many expensive players have been attracted who have brought nothing. The current selection is too bad. You should start again with new, hungry players. ”

The 35-year-old barely features for current side FC Midtjylland and is expected to leave the Danish club in the summer.
