After racing to the title last season, Liverpool wanted to make a good start to their defence and had Van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum in the starting lineup against Leeds. The Premier League newboys had Dutchman Pascal Struijk in defence.
It seemed Liverpool were going to ease to victory when Mo Salah netted a penalty after four minutes, but Jack Harrison levelled for the visitors in the 12th minute.
Van Dijk then headed Liverpool back in front but the Dutch centre-back then gifted Patrick Bamford the ball on the half-an-hour mark and the Leeds striker equalised again.
Salah restored Liverpool’s lead quickly but in the second half, Leeds once again equalised through former PEC Zwolle and FC Twente midfielder Mateusz Klich.
The game was heading for a draw but in the 87th minute, another penalty was awarded for Liverpool and Salah completed his hattrick to seal the win for Liverpool.
Not the greatest start to the season for Van Dijk or Wijnaldum, who is still being linked with a move to Barcelona. However, they got the win that they were looking for.
