Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk is proud of his teammates despite their 1-0 loss to Portugal in the final of the UEFA Nations League.

A single Goncalo Guedes strike in the second half was enough for Portugal to defeat Netherlands and lift the Nations League trophy.

After the game, Van Dijk told NOS, “It’s hard to say why it didn’t work out tonight. I think we had the options. It was an open game, I think, with lots of space and big holes.

“We knew they would sit deep, wait for our mistakes. It’s a shame you lose. We wanted to lift that cup here . Anyway, we have to be proud of ourselves.

“I am never negative towards my team. We are making great strides as a team, both inside and outside the field. This should not ruin our development. We will continue and we will prepare ourselves as much as possible for (Euro 2020) qualification.”
