Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk is hoping for a win but admitted a defensive improvement is needed when Oranje host Germany on Sunday.

Netherlands comfortably defeated Belarus 4-0 in their opening Euro qualifier, but the match wasn’t perfect according to Van Dijk, who feels the defence needs to be tighter against Germant.

He told the pre-match press conference on Saturday, “We do know what needs to be improved, that is the most important thing. What that is? Everyone could see that. Belarus has created a number of possibilities. Better countries will certainly punish that. ”

On Germany, Van Dijk said, “At the moment they are not in the best period, but we should not forget that they have great players.

“They are a team with high quality and individual quality, and that we shouldn’t ignore.”

In November, van Dijk scored in the 2-2 draw in Germany that won Netherlands the UEFA Nations League group. He admitted Netherlands were lucky that night, “We were lucky then. They had many position changes and scored at the right moments. It was very clear that we were not the better team that night, but we did win the group. You have to learn from that: at some moments you have to play a bit more compact and disciplined.”

Van Dijk expects to see an improved Germany but is aiming for a victory on Sunday, “We will enter Sunday’s match to win.”
