Milan van Ewijk scored the only goal of the game as Heerenveen defeated Excelsior 1-0 on Saturday evening.

Heerenveen have built their side on a strong defence so far this season and Excelsior didn’t even manage a shot on target in the first half.

Just before the hour mark, Heerenveen broke the deadlock as Milan van Ewijk cut inside before firing the ball into the far corner.

Soon afterward, Pawel Bochniewicz had the ball in the net but the defender’s goal was disallowed by VAR for offside. Then Excelsior went down the other end and Couhaib Driouech had the ball in the net but his equaliser was also rejected by VAR for a handball in the build-up.

Heerenveen saw out the victory and they are now seventh while Excelsior is in 12th.
