The Dutchman has been under severe pressure this season after a campaign which has seen the former Premier League champions struggle to reach the top four and knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages.

Manchester United are currently four points adrift of rivals Manchester City, who sit fourth, although they do have a game in hand.

Speaking at the club’s end of season awards dinner, Van Gaal told the crowd, “We are in a period of transition. It is not so easy.

“We have to meet the expectations of the biggest club in the world. Expectations are too high.”

Rumours in the media persist to speculate that Van Gaal will be sacked if Manchester United fail to reach the top four, with Jose Mourinho waiting in the wings to take over.

Van Gaal slammed the rumours, which he believes have affected his players, but insisted they do not affect him.

He said, “When the media is writing for six months I am sacked already… I can cope with that. It is not new for me. For my players, it is not so easy.

“They are reading every day. What do you think about my authority? What do you think about the way they want to follow my advice, when their coach is showed like a nobody because I cannot do anything?

“But I am not like that. I am very arrogant. I am one of the best managers of the world.”
