Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal has discussed why some players are missing from his provisional squad ahead of the World Cup qualifiers next month.

The new Oranje boss unveiled his provisional squad on Friday for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers with Norway, Montenegro and Turkey.

Joël Veltman, Patrick Van Aanholt, Denzel Dumfries, Owen Wijndal, Quincy Promes and Luuk de Jong are all missing, while Jasper Cillessen and Marco Bizot are also not involved.

In his press release with the squad announcement, Van Gaal explained, “Everyone knows that the international match week in September is very important and the preparation time is very short. That means we need players who are there right away.

“Not all clubs and players are equally far in the preparation, so I have to take that into account. That’s why I haven’t put a number of players on the list now. But I want to emphasize that everyone is and remains in my picture.”
