The 18-year-old made his debut for the club at left back on Sunday, but was thrust into the starting line-up for the tie with Watford on Wednesday. Fosu-Mensah put in a terrific performance in the centre of defence, and helped his side to a 1-0 win, coping well with the strike duo of Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo.
After the game, Louis van Gaal was full of praise for the youngster. He told Manchester United’s official website, “Timothy has saved us three times, I think, because of his speed,”
“So I was very pleased that he was on the pitch. He wanted to be changed early in the second half (because of a knock) but I let him stay on because he always closed the door for us.
“I think the youngsters have given us a lot of spirit and now, when you see the dressing room full of joy with all the players laughing, it’s beautiful to see.”
