Barcelona announced that they had signed the 21-year-old from Ajax in January, with Frenkie de Jong joining the Catalan side for a fee of up to €86 million in the summer.
Speaking to Ziggo Sport, Louis van Gaal is unsure whether it is a wise decision for the Dutch international.
He said, “I have also once said that it would have been more sensible for Frenkie de Jong if he had gone to Paris Saint-Germain, while at Barcelona, in Rakitic, Arthur, Vidal and Busquets there are going to be players around who can take his seat.
“I also think Frenkie de Jong is a great talent, but I also think he has to go through a whole development. So that step might be too early, if Rakitic and Arthur do not leave, it will be hard for Frenkie to play such a player out, and is it such a good step at the right time? “
Check out the video below to see how we rate Frenkie de Jong at the moment. Do you think the midfielder is ready for Barcelona? Let us know in the comments section.
Ik kan me Van Gaals opmerkingen goed voorstellen maar… voor hetzelfde geld speelt hij zich in de basis voor het middenveld. Veel middenvelders van Barcelona zijn al aardig op leeftijd.
Many articles indicated this was the main reason he was leaning towards PSG up until the Barca execs visited him very late in the window. PSG offered a larger transfer fee, higher wages, and a guaranteed starting position.
So what made him change his mind? Surely not just the “reputation” of Barca? They must have assured him he’d get a LOT of playing time right away.
dear van girl..unlike you, real men and winners doesn’t fear challenges. btw, looking at de jong’s style of play…simple reason why he will be a natural at barca is by comparing him with Arthur Melo, who was about 70% ready to play for barca before his arrival at barca while playing for gremio.. looking at de Jong ‘s style of play and his weakness in the air, he already looks like a barca player. he is 90%ready. TOO MANY MIDFIELDERS… well, Barca won’t find it hard to choose between him and Rakitic who probably have only 1 or 2 more good seasons left. and will not be surprise to let him leave while they can still get some dollars or keep him for one more season if they don’t want to take any chances in the transitioning season… Arthur, dembele, dejong, coutinho, samedo, alena, etc guided by GOAT Messi….??what a future
